Communication Resources

Crucial Conversations – this book offers concrete strategies for effective communication, especially when emotions are strong, viewpoints differ, and when stakes are high.  The tools outlined in this book can be used in everyday communication as well. Consider using these skills to improve your communication with your mentees. You can also take what you’ve learned and discuss in the lab group as a whole.

Active Listening Strategies – basic tools for listening when acting as a coach (an approach mentors can take with mentees)

DEI Resources

Diversity Resiliency Institute of El Paso’s anti-racism training – this is a free, self-paced training that focuses on systems racism and tools for anti-racist action. Sessions open up periodically, check back often to see when the next one opens.

Racial Equity Institute

AAAS STEM Mentorship Guide: Emerging Strategies for Inclusion – a report summarizing results and recommendations from meetings between recipients of two major mentoring awards – the AAAS Lifetime Mentoring Award and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science Mentoring.

Equity in Graduate Education resources for faculty and departments. Includes option to join virtual journal clubs focused on research related to diversity and equity in higher ed.

Equity in Science by Julie Posselt. This book has a thorough discussion of the current equity issues and presents case studies of departments, training programs, and change efforts lead by national societies. Included also are relevant discussions of culture and climate in academia how to manage change.
